Paul Bassick gets ready to take a healthy rip at the ball during a preseason tourney game against the Average Joes, the Pirates won a wild slugfest, outscoring the Joe’s 43-21.

The Preseason Tourney for the USCG Jim Tabor Memorial Softball League started off with a bang and finished with a fizzle (drizzle is more appropriate). The OTIS NOTICE Pirates and the Falmouth team, Got the Runs swept their way to the finals with convincing victories, but rain and scheduling conflicts kept the teams from battling out on the Otis diamond for early bragging rights in the 2010 season.

6th the Pirates rattled off nine straight hits, as Glenn Christiansen, Trever Ankey and JR Hoadley singled, Tim Utley followed with a double, Jarad Lemieux had a 2-run single, Mike “Hoad” a d d e d a n R B I s i n g l e , a s d i d Machado, before “K” cleaned them Larry Kenny

GTR beat the strikeouts 20-4, nipped the Marine Lodge Masons 11-10, before putting a serious hurting on Army Team Patriot, by the score of 43-11. In the other half of the bracket, the Misfits grounded the Air Force Pave PAWS team 16-8, before they lost to the USCG Air Station Crush team by the score of 16-1. The Pirates scored big in their 2 wins, defeating the Average Joe’s 42-21 and then holding of the Crush team in 20-7 contest. As you would expect in a 42 run win, the Pirates had plenty of hitting stars, 2B Jarad Lemieux had 7 hits (1 HR), 6 runs, and 5 RBI’s, OF Mike

all up with a three-run jack to right. Those two big innings changed a 4-run game into a 19-4 rout. The Pirates got one more in the 8th (the teams played 9 innings) as 3B Jim Lacroix drove in Larry who had singled and moved around on hits by Ken and Mike Camire. The Crush scored a few runs in the 8th, albeit not quite enough on hits by

Not to be left out, SS and lead-off hitter Tim Utley, had 4 hits (1 Grand Slam HR), 5 runs and 6 RBI’s, Phil Wolf and Mike “Junior” Hoadley each had “only” 4 hits, Philly added 4 runs and 3 RBI’s, while JR had 4 runs, (1 Grand Slam HR) and knocked in 7 runs

The Joe’s scored 21 runs and showed some hope for the future as they turned 3 double plays against the Pirates.

In the Pirates second game; they took on the Air Station Crush who finished just behind the Pirates in second place at the end last year. The Pirates jumped out to 5-0 lead in the 1st inning on hits by Tim, Jarad, and Hoad. Then Larry Machado cracked a two-run single, before Ken Kinsella hit an RBI single. Mike Camire finished it off with a sac fly RBI. In the bottom of the second the Crush struck back with 3 runs as Gary “Spurge” Spurgeon, Ed Liebold, Jon Emerson and Travis McGregor banged out hits. Both defenses settled down and after 4 innings the Pirates led 8-4, as SS Tim Utley and 2B Jarad Lemieux made some fine plays, as did Crush SS Cliff Taylor. The Pirates broke open a close game with 4 runs in the 5th and another 7 in the 6th to build a comfortable lead. In the 5th after hits by Tim and Jarad, Hoad had a two-run double and quickly came around on a two-run dinger by Ken Kinsella. In the

1B Ken Kinsella who made a fine stretch to just nip the runner at 1B and end the game.

So the Pirates and GTR were scheduled to finish up the preseason and declare a mythical preseason champ, but the weather and scheduling prevented that from happening, both teams are looking at a make-up date even though the season has started. They just want to get an extra game in and do battle with their new rivals.
