Shop Primed Steel Surfaces: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer and rust, hand clean, clean surfaces with solvent. Prime bare steel surfaces. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Wipe off dust and grit prior to priming. Seal knots, pitch streaks, and sappy sections with sealer. Fill nail holes and cracks after primer has dried; sand between coats. K. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Transparent Finish: Wipe off dust and grit prior to sealing; seal knots, pitch streaks and sappy sections with sealer. Fill nail holes and cracks after sealer has dried; sand between coats. L. Exterior Wood Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Remove dust, grit and foreign matter. Seal knots, pitch streaks and sappy sections. Fill nail holes with tinted exterior caulking compound after primer coat has been applied. M. Exterior Wood Scheduled to Receive Transparent Finish: Remove dust, grit and foreign matter; seal knots, pitch streaks and sappy section with sealer. Fill nail holes with tinted exterior caulking compound after sealer has been applied. N. Schedule all cleaning and painting so that dust and other contaminants from the cleaning process will not fall on wet, newly painted surfaces. L J.

3.02

MIXING AND THINNING

    • A.

      Where necessary, and immediately before application, the Contractor may thin packaged paint with not more than one pint of thinner per gallon of paint. Do not mix paints of different manufacturers.

      • 3.03

        APPLICATION

  • A.

    The Contractor shall apply all coatings by trowel, brush, roller or spray as recommended by the manufacturer. Apply coatings to finished surfaces fi'ee from runs, drops, ridges, waves, laps, brush marks and variation in color, texture and finish. Apply each coat as a full coat.

  • S.

    The Contractor shall rigidly enforce the manufacturers hazard warnings and safety recommendations. Provide adequate ventilation. Respirators and eye protection shall be worn by all persons engaged in coating applications. Do not permit sources of excessive heat or open flame in working areas.

  • C.

    Comply with the manufacturers recommendations as to environmental conditions for applying the coating systems.

  • D.

    Do not apply paint in areas where dust in being generated. Apply products in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Sand transparent finish lightly between coats to achieve required finish.

  • G.

    Where clear finishes are required, tint fillers to match wood.

  • H.

    Back prime exterior woodwork scheduled to receive paint finish with primer paint.

  • I.

    Back prime interior woodwork scheduled to receive stain or varnish finish with gloss vamish reduced 25 percent with mineral spirits.
