Liquid Scintillation

this type of counter is used to measure radiation (often low-energy β) by using a vial that contains a sample and liquid scintillator fluid

when radiation passed through the liquid the liquid emits a pulse of light

this light is then picked up by two different PMTs.   If both PMTs detect the light at the same time then the count is marked

with this technique the radiation emitted from the sample can be accurately documented without too much background radiation interfering with the measurements
