Semiconductor Properties-     Band Structure in Solids

periodic lattice of crystalline material establishes

allowed energy bands for electrons that exist within that solid

energy of any electron within the pure material must be continued to one of these energy bands, which may be  separated by gaps or ranges of forbidden energies

lower band called valence band corresponds to those electrons that are bound to specific lattice sites within the crystal

next higher-lying band is the conduction band
