Schenectady 2020 Comprehensive Plan Mont Pleasant Neighborhood Meeting Two February 28, 2006

Introduction

There are two major priorities for the City of Schenectady over the next fifteen years:

  • To establish Schenectady as a residential community of choice by increasing housing opportunities and offering new types of housing not currently available in the City

  • To stabilize the City’s tax base by increasing contributions from the City’s retail, commercial and industrial uses and expanding its job base.

In this meeting, the participants were asked to identify the contribution the Mont Pleasant neighborhood can make toward accomplishing these goals. To facilitate the discussion, city and consultant staff prepared a list of issues identified in the first neighborhood meeting Review of three categories – Housing, Economic Development, and Parks and Recreation

Group 1 Discussion: Economic Development and Parks

  • Everything going on Downtown is taxable

  • Great business response to Proctor’s

Economic Development Issues:

  • Crane Street – facades, sidewalks, trees; great potential, good traffic

  • Business Association is not active

  • Make Chrisler one-way from Ostrander to intersection with Crane St (this section of the street is too narrow for two-way traffic with parking on both sides of the street)

  • Triangle (intersection of Chrisler and Crane) – has the potential for creating a center square area

  • Ostrander and 8th – bad intersection

  • Traffic around Hamilton School is also a problem

  • Lack of parking area serving businesses along Crane Street

  • Used to be pedestrian oriented businesses

  • Main to Francis (along Crane Street is generally considered the commercial hub of the neighborhood

  • City parking lot behind diner – improve (perhaps expand) lot

  • Altamont and Chrisler – proposed rezoning for new drug store

  • Need upgraded street lighting and increased police presence along Crane Street

  • Good new residential development (Mont Pleasant Commons)
