After having returned to Kona to apologize to Kumu Hilda, Kumu Jay-Jay decided to move on with his hula career. Although he spent more time with Kumu Hilda, he had his eyes on Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua of Moloka`i. Kumu Hilda gave her blessing to go and share with Kumu John, and the two became very close. He has learned from and shared with many teachers throughout his life, all of whom remain a big inspiration to him. At the young age of 36, anyone who meets him will know that he is an old soul – a soul that lives and breathes the Hula: "Hula is your life, if your hula is good then so is your life, but if you hula is bad then so is your life."
