addition to armed forms of struggle, the anti-fascist forces employed other forms, namely economic, political and ideological forms of struggle against fas- cism and militarism.

In analysing the social and political results of the participation of the colo- nial peoples in the second world war on the side of the anti-fascist coalition So- viet historians have arrived at the conclusion that this participation helped raise the political and national consciousness of the peoples of the colonies and con- tributed to the rise of the struggle for national liberation. The soldiers and guer- rillas who fought against the fascists and militarists became, as a rule, active fighters in the ranks of the liberation movements and leaders in the armed strug- gle for independence.

The national-liberation struggle of the peoples in the colonies resulted in the birth of more than 90 independent states after the war. Many of these states were able to embark on the path of non-capitalist development and some have started to build up a socialist society. L.I. Brezhnev said:

"Since the Second World War, since our victory over fascism, more than 2,000 million people have thrown off the yoke of the colonialists and have risen to independent statehood. The colonial system of imperialism in its classical forms can, on the whole, be regarded as having been dismantled. That... is an epoch-making development." 3
