C   Patients are allocated by random assignment

To effectively evaluate experimental agents or procedures, randomized clinical trials must be performed. Randomized clinical trials should be double-blinded in all but the most exceptional circumstances, and patient allocation should be achieved by a random process in which each patient has the same probability of being allocated to a specific treatment or control arm. Allocation based on prognosis, parental preference, or clinical judgment can lead to seriously biased results and flawed conclusions about the efficacy of the experimental treatment.
