Jazz Band Iis Notre Dame's top performing jazz

ly consisting of non-music majors from every field of study at the University. Selected by audition at the beginning of the school year, the members rehearse two hours aweek. The group has three primary goals: (1 ) to playa variety of musical styles within the jazz idiom, (2) to primarily perform "real" music, that is, the original arrangements which have been performed by majorjazz orchestras such as Ellington, Basie, Herman, Ferguson, Jones­ Lewis, Clayton-Hamilton, etc. ,and (3) to encourage students in the group to develop and display their skills at improvisation.

The ND Jazz Band plays at four campus events each year: Fall con­ cert, Junior Parents Weekend, Collegiate Jazz Festival, and Spring concert. In addition the group occasionally plays concerts in Chicago and at local public school outreach assemblies.

At CJF, director Larry Dwyertwice was named BestTrombonist, was the student leader of ND'sjazz band and combo in 1966, and served as a CJFjudge in 1987. He is nowin his fourthyearasdirec­ tor ofjazz studies at Notre Dame.

Jazz Band 2 is Notre Dame's second performingjazz ensemble, primarily consisting of non-music majors from every field of study at the University. Selected by audition at the beginning of the school year, the members rehearse two hours aweek. The group has three primary goals: (1 ) to playa variety of musical styles with­ in the jazz idiom, (2) to develop musical cohesion and stylistic accuracy, and (3) to encourage students in the group to develop and display their skills at improvisation.

Jazz Band 2 plays at three campus events each year: Fall concert, Collegiate Jazz Festival Preview, and Spring concert, as well as occasional other programs.

Graduate assistant Matt Merten works along with professor Larry Dwyer in leading Jazz Band 2.
