RESTORING MY FAITH

To the untrained eye, the demolition industry is filled to bursting point with strange contradictions. Demolition contractors exist to destroy buildings and structures and yet they actively pioneer materials and resource efficiency. It is perceived as an uneducated sector and yet it has embraced levels of training and personnel development that is the envy of many other “better educated” business areas. But nowhere are the perceived contradictions more evident than they are in the National Federation of Demolition Contractors. The Federation’s 160+ corporate members, those responsible for around 90 percent of the UK’s demolition activities, are currently striving to secure a slice of workload shrunken by the collapse of the house building sector and the meltdown of world economies. Yet while they compete day in and day out, they will happily set aside their corporate rivalries to back the NFDC’s objective of creating a safer industry for its employees. Then, at the recent NFDC Annual Convention in Majorca, came yet another example. Throughout the three days leading up to the gala dinner, speeches, presentations and discussions at the bar and over dinner all voiced concern over the economic outlook, unanimously agreeing that the short-term outlook was bleak. And yet, when the gala dinner arrived the industry united, reaching deep into its collective pockets to raise a staggering £25,000 for the Dwarf Athletic Association, a charity with a close personal connection to NFDC chief executive Howard Button. To the outsider, such an act of universal generosity at a time of economic uncertainty could be perceived as yet another demolition industry contradiction. But to those of us that regularly move in demolition circles will attest, it is in fact merely another example of the sector doing what it does better than any other – helping its own.
