BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE
Coatbridge based demolition contractor Reigart Contracts Ltd have recently completed the demolition of three tower blocks at Millarston Paisley as part of the regeneration of the area.

The project involved the internal clearance, asbestos removal and soft-stripping of the blocks in advance of the preparation for demolition by controlled use of explosives.
■ P R E - W E A K E N I N G S C H E M E Reigart’s structural engineers designed the essential pre- weakening scheme and drilling sequence for the buildings, prior to their explosives engineers charging the tower blocks.
Over 10Km of cables were connected to just 150Kg of explosives which was all that was needed to reduce the three
blocks to 6,000 tonnes of rubble in under 10 seconds.
■ H U G E S A F E T Y O P E R A T I O N The proximity of the buildings to an operational electrified railway line meant that the demolition had to be carried out in the early hours of a Sunday morning and necessitated a huge logistical exercise to ensure the safety of surrounding residents.
Reigart created a safety exclusion zone and arranged for the overnight evacuation of 218 nearby homes.

was monitored prior to blowdown by security guards, police foot patrols with dog handlers, and a police helicopter with thermal imaging cameras to make certain that no- one had breached the safety barriers.
After blowdown, the concrete and brick which had made up the structures was processed, crushed and recycled into aggregates for re-use.

who combined the fruits of their considerable expertise to achieve the successful outcome of the project.
