Learn the secrets lurking in our own backyard as we explore Unexpected New York: 87 Discoveries in Familiar Places. Author Chester Burger, a native New Yorker, has spent many years photographing the streets of New York. He began his career at CBS as a pageboy and became the country’s first television news reporter in 1946. He currently serves as an advisor to the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Public Affairs.

Learn the secrets behind simple happiness at this enlightening talk. Jim Ryan, a motivational speaker and author, will reveal the eight characteristics of happy people. Through anecdotes, quotes, humor, and song, members will learn how to step out of their comfort zone and live peaceful, happier lives. Mr. Ryan’s career began some nine years ago when he first began teaching and volunteering in the Suffolk County Prison System.

How to Get into Graduate School

Tom Rock, admissions director at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, will join us to discuss the graduate school admissions process. Mr. Rock will discuss admissions processes at graduate schools in general, not just graduate schools of education.

Using Technology for Your Personal Finances

The technology that’s available today to help you manage your finances can be overwhelming and not just because of security concerns. Computers, the internet, smart phones, notebooks, and interactive TV are just a few of the tools we have to help us save time and manage our finances better. Gary Sheehan, a specialist in information technology and current SVP at Citigroup, will help you understand how these tools can help you manage your finances and save you time and money. At this event we will be discussing and demonstrating a number of tools you should consider using. Major topics include:

  • Online transactions – how secure are they? Is my personal information really safe?

  • Using the internet for online banking – saving time, money, and being green

  • Using the internet for online brokerage – quickly check what your broker is telling you

  • Investment research – a review of free and pay-to-use sites

  • Using Tax software to do your taxes

Is America Safe? With General Richard Myers

As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001 to 2005, General Myers bore witness to the critical events that shaped America’s defense policy in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In the days, weeks, months, and years that followed he worked around the clock, helping devise innovative, unprecedented, and historic strategies for America’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. General Myers will give an insider’s perspective, and discuss the mistakes made by the White House, Pentagon leadership, and the intelligence community.
