14.COACH AND PLAYER SELECTION
The GRMHC chooses coaches through a Coaches’ Selection Committee, chaired by the Director, Hockey Operations. Coaches at each level are selected according to procedures outlined in the ODMHA “Coaches Selection Handbook”. The criteria include: coaching level attained through formal clinics; background and coaching experience; references; known or referenced reliability and integrity; coaching philosophy compatible with Club philosophy and policies. The Selection Committee endeavours to select persons that are the most appropriate, best qualified and most responsible for the fair evaluation and assigning of players to teams. Final assignments may be aided by Convenor and/or others assigned by the Club for this purpose.
Coach selection is made prior to the 31st of July if possible. Those wishing to be considered for coaching positions should notify a Director of the Club prior to this date for consideration for the forthcoming hockey season. All applicants will be notified in writing or phone as to the disposition of their application/interview.
All coaching applicants must have their Intermediate Level (old Level III) of the C.H.A. National Coaches Certification Programme.
The key premise upon which the Club bases its tryouts is that each player plays at a level compatible with his or her skill, ability, attitude and experience level.
Each tryout hour should be limited to approximately 40 players on the ice, in order to avoid confusion and allow proper evaluation.
Gate revenue from tryouts should fully support the cost of ice.
Each player will be assessed while performing basic or advanced hockey skills.
Player assignment should be done with the utmost dispatch. Sensitivity, respect and consideration to the self-image of the players should be foremost.
Coaches from each level within a Division may assist the team coach in the evaluation and selection process. Coaches (and Home Association representatives if requested) must meet with DHO during the tryouts to review their observations, analysis and assigning of players.
DHO will be in attendance at all final releases of players.
