Actions promoted by the Ombudsman’s offices

Although it is not a government office, we believe it is necessary to include information on initiatives that have been developed from the Ombudsman’s office. This body has produced a report assessing the school violence in secondary schools in 2006, which has had a major impact on Spanish society (Ombudsman, 2006). The relevance of this document for our interests lies in the inclusion of specific questions on the issue of cyberbullying, the first research work about this phenomenon in our country.

Also want to mention in this section the role played by the Ombudsman for Children in the community of Madrid. NON-GOVERNMENTAL INITIATIVES AGAINST CYBERBULLYING

Cyberbullying episodes broadcast by the media and the growing social awareness about the problem of cyberbullying and other misuses of ICT have boosted the development of initiatives and projects to deal with these problems. NGOs, private associations and companies have assumed a key role in this process.

Specific initiatives

The most consolidated initiative in Spain, created with the objective of responding to the specific problem of cyberbullying, is Friendly Screens. This is an initiative that emerged in 2004 with the aim of promoting safe and healthy use of internet and new online technologies by children. To do this, they issued publications and training materials, hold conferences and workshops, conducted studies and raised social awareness through various media channels.
