SCHOOL INITIATIVES AGAINST CYBERBULLYING

Analyzing school initiatives against cyberbullying in Spanish schools requires consideration of the response that has been previously established to address school violence and bullying. We are aware that cyberbullying beyond school walls, like other forms of violence, but the school is a privileged context for education and, therefore, for preventing these problems occurring both inside and outside of schools.

Apart from specific initiatives, Spanish educational community has shown to be aware of the existence of problems of school violence and bullying since the early nineties of last century and the line of action backed by civil services, national and regional, has been the education for convivencia. In other words, educational settings, especially those that offer compulsory education, must design a project of convivencia. This implies that the educational community, with the teacher leadership and management team must analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the convivencia of its centre, make aware them to everyone involved, design actions to improve it, develop and evaluate them.

This performance framework has enabled the school response to cyberbullying is not reduced to specific programs, but will gradually integrating to existing projects. It is therefore difficult to find specific school initiatives against cyberbullying, but actions that have been integrated into the convivencia projects of different schools.

This is not to say that the response to cyberbullying in Spanish schools is widespread, that it is not yet, but to make explicit the process that schools are following for this addition. Therefore, for the presentation of school initiatives we will use examples of specific actions that schools have developed in different lines of convivencia projects, between them take more priority those aimed at the information and awareness, characteristics of emerging problems such as cyberbullying.
