ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
THE FJMC YOM HASHOAH YELLOW CANDLE PROGRAM
THENEXTSTEP is sent to the rabbis, exec- utive director, president, and three other lay leaders of each United Synagogue member congregation. Published three times a year, the newsletter is packed with information on resources and programs for your syna- gogue. We mail The Next Step directly to the president at the synagogue and to the homes of the other officers. But we can’t do this without your help. Please mail, fax, or email the names and addresses of your officers and any changes in your syna- gogue personnel to your regional director.
GIFT PACKAGES TO ISRAEL
Through a service of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, gift pack- ages can be sent to friends and family in Israel as well as to IDF soldiers on active duty and victims of terror in Israel. A donation is made to Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center for each package you buy. Download order forms to pay by check, or shop online at www.uscjisraelbaskets.com.
The yellow candle program, now in its 26th year, was developed by the Men’s Club of Congregation Beth Tzedec in Toronto. Men’s Club members wanted to devise a way to keep alive the memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. The yellow candle is modeled after the traditional memorial candle that burns for 24 hours on the anniversary of the death of a family member and on hol- idays when Yizkor is recited.
The candle’s yellow wax and the draw- ing of a Jewish star and a strand of barbed wire evoke the yellow armbands that Jews were forced to wear during the Shoah. The photo on the candle showing children leaving a concentration camp reminds us of our duty to teach our children about the Shoah so that it may never happen again.
To help fulfill this obligation, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs sup- ports a special fund, From Darkness into Light, which provides scholarships to USY members who participate in the USY Israel Pilgrimage/Poland Seminar or its Eastern Europe/Israel Pilgrimage pro- gram. A portion of the proceeds from
each yellow candle is contributed to the fund. Every USYer who belongs to a syn- agogue that participates in the Yellow Candle program is eligible for this schol- arship. For more information about the scholarship, call United Synagogue’s youth department at 212-533-7800, ext. 2325.
Remember to light your yellow candle on erev Yom Hashoah, Sunday, April 15.
