Autobiography.  When he failed to learn to ride a horse, his father bought him a bicycle.  

In World War One he served as a spy, which formed the foundation for a series of spy

novels.  Following the war he worked for the Office of Works and combined that with a

career as an author and lecturer.  “George,” actually a series of three speed bicycles,

appears in many of his travel books.
