Canadian Creelman rode across Canada, parts of Asia, the Middle East and Europe in an 1899 round the world journey.

Murphy, Dervla (1931-).  The Ukimwi Road.  Woodstock, N.Y.: The Overlook Press, 1993.

In 1992 Murphy determined to get away and enjoy herself on her first derailleur bicycle,

Lear.  Instead she traveled three thousand miles from Kenya through Uganda, Tanzania,

Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, reporting on the impact of AIDS on Africa (Ukimwi is

Swahili for AIDS).

Pinkerton, Elaine. The Santa Fe Trail by bicycle: a historic adventure. Santa Fe: Red Crane Books, 1993.  {27010544}

A guide book focusing on the historic trail from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to New Franklin, Missouri.  Pinkerton has ridden the route, providing daily mileage, information on the route, both historic and topographical, and some general information about riding.

Retallick, Martha (1957-).  Discovering America: bicycle adventures in all 50 states.  Tucson, AZ: Lone Rider Productions, 1993.  {29486034}

In the 1980’s and 1990’s she completed three long rides to “bag” most of the United States, and then completed the last few as special rides.  In addition to the bicycle travel there is some introspective autobiographical material.

Ridge, Frank. Biking (and schmoozing) across America with my daughter. Pittsburgh: Sports

Support Syndicate, Inc., 1993.  {43467203}

Perhaps because I did this ride the year after Frank and Julie Ridge, I think this is an

interesting narrative.  A sixty seven year old man became the top fund raiser for the

League of American Wheelmen (now Bicyclists), enjoying the company of his daughter,

who swum the English Channel and around Manhattan Island, and is cited in the

Guinness book or world records. Along with sixty-two other cyclers, they rode thirty two

hundred miles, Los Angeles to Boston, in forty-seven days.
