Standards Change, constancy, and measurement Measurement Reasoning
Description The measurement worksheet is an additional activity designed to introduce measurement to young students. The activity requires students to locate and color California, Ohio, and Florida on a map of the United States. The students will then determine the distance between these states using a supplied ruler.
Time Requirements 10 minutes
Materials Measurement worksheet (pages 27, 28, and 29) Pencil Scissors Crayons
Have the students cut off the ruler at the bottom of the worksheet before completing questions 4 to 8.
The students should then use the airplane ruler to measure the distances between the states on the map printed in the worksheet.
Background Information The teacher may want to read each question aloud to nonreaders and do the activity as a group. This activity is also a great way to reinforce “color” words to emerging readers.
Assessment Students should be assessed on how accurately they color the map and answer the questions.
