Chamber members are the best!

By Debbie Moreno, CEO

I have “good news” to share this month. You know, the kind of comments that will get you fined in Rotary.

First, I’m sure many of you saw the Houchin Blood Bank window as you drove down Truxtun during the first 20 days of August, announcing the Vision 2020 Community Wide Blood Drive. According to Houchin, the blood drive was an outstanding success and, at the end of the 20 days, their inventory was at 100% -- a rarely attained goal. Many more donors than are typical for August gave blood at the two Houchin locations. Ad- ditionally, there were one or more mobile collection sites at area businesses every day of the drive.

What’s the Chamber connection? Although Vision 2020 is a separate entity from the Chamber, one of the long terms goals of the GBCC is to support and provide a leadership role in Vision 2020 efforts. Many of our members helped to reach this outstanding result for the blood drive through planning, sponsorship and blood donation… so pat yourselves on the back.

If you haven’t already heard, two of your fellow Chamber member businesses were recently named on the first-ever list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies on the Inc. 5,000 list. Congratulations to ARRC Technology and Lightspeed Systems. According to both Scott Garrison from Lightspeed and Monique Rogers from ARRC, they heard about the list and how to apply because of the Chamber’s broadcast email to members, alerting them to this new and exciting opportunity for businesses. The Chamber’s response… we’re glad to be of service!

Summer Social was last night, and it was a great event. It's the Chamber’s only fund- raiser of the year, and the support from our business community was outstanding. If you weren’t there, you missed a great time.

Lastly, a well deserved congratulations to 2005 Chamber Chairman of the Board Greg Bynum on being honored this month as the John Brock Award recipient. The Chamber is only one of many ways Greg serves our community, and he truly is deserving.

Gregory D. Bynum and Associates, Inc. is a full service real estate company specializing in real estate development, appraisal-analysis, property management, brokerage and consultation, providing service to Bakersfield and surrounding areas. Established in April of 1981 as a sole proprietorship by Gregory D. Bynum, the company initially focused on real estate appraisal and client investment consulting and acquisition. Since that time, the staff has expanded and the firm has diversified to provide a full range of commercial real estate services. Bynum, who served as the Chamber's Chairman of the Board in 2005, was named as this year's recipient of the John Brock Community Service award and is the first graduate from CSUB and the first graduate from the university's School of Business & Public Administration to receive this prestigious honor in recognition of his commitment and service to the community.
