Public Health Implications

Future studies need to evaluate the correlation between birth outcomes and psychotropic medication exposure. This includes the number of psychotropic medications, the specific class of psychotropic medication,  and the timing of that exposure relative to the pregnancy.

Future studies designed to evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal care need to consider the medical-diagnostic characteristics of pregnant women, including their exposure to specific prescription drugs.
