Study Methods

Design = Cross-sectional analysis of all women initiating prenatal care in 2003.

Database = California fee-for-service Medicaid 35-File claims database.

Inclusion criteria = All women receiving an initial obstetric office visit in 2003.

Time Period = Any filled prescription during 2003 without regard to the timing of the pregnancy. Women could have been exposed to psychotropic medications in the months before, during, or after the pregnancy.

Drug codes = First Databank Smart Key code - a unique code for each prescription drug to identify nearly every aspect of the drug, such as the generic drug class, the specific drug class, the dosage form, the route of administration, etc.
