Kingston-Rhinecliff Project On Track

Designed by D.B. Steinman, the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge is one of the country’s longest continuous deck truss bridges. Rehabilitation of the bridge began in 2000, and includes a wider new deck, new deck joints, and safety improvements, all while maintaining both lanes of traffic. Opened to traffic in 1957, the 7793 foot (2375 meter) bridge spans the Hudson River 90 miles (150 km) north of New York City, and is com- prised of deck girder approaches and 5200 feet (1584 meters) of deck truss spans. The bridge is owned and operat- ed by the New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA), a toll authority operating five major Hudson River crossings.

In order to widen the deck from 41 to 43 feet (12.5 to 13.1 meters) while reduc- ing total deck dead load to achieve an HS-25 load rating (from HS-18, well below modern standards for major bridges), it was necessary to select a lightweight deck system. A value engi-
