Snowbound forests above Lillehammer
& Weekend Blueprint
Challenge yourself to a top-flight adrenalin kick you’ll remember for a long time. For adventure-seekers, this could well be the highlight of your winter, with the chance to pack in a morning’s skiing or hard- core tobogganing as well.
Weekend Blueprint—London departures
Afternoon flight to Oslo. Direct train transfer to Lillehammer, then short taxi ride to hotel. Check in and relax—if staying at the Radisson perhaps take a dip in the pool or sauna (Hotel Hammer also has a sauna). For dinner, either dine in (Radisson) or check out one of the bars or restaurants in the centre of town. Ask your hotel to pre-book a taxi for you for Saturday afternoon to get from Hafjell Ski Centre to the bobsleigh track (allow yourself a generous hour to walk the track and perhaps watch a few training runs before your allotted start time).
Take one of the morning ski-busses from hotel (Radisson) or railway station (Hammer) to Hafjell ski Centre for a morning’s downhill skiing or snowboarding. (Non-skiers can enjoy a stroll round Lillehammer’s attractive centre, perhaps taking in its highly- regarded art museum, before catching a later ski-bus out to Hafjell.) Grab lunch at one of the Hafjell cafés before taking your pre-booked taxi across the valley to the bobsleigh track. Check-in with the centre staff then soak up the atmosphere until called. After completing your run(s) return to Lillehammer by taxi or, more economically, taxi + ski- bus. (To avoid waiting, pre-arrange pick-up with the taxi before drop off.) Hit the sauna before well-deserved celebratory dinner and drinks.
After a recuperative lie-in and maybe a swim or sauna check out of hotel (storing bags for later). Spend the rest of the morning hot-dog tobogganing at the Kanthaugen Olym- pic Arena on the edge of town—take a taxi. Ski/snowboard fanatics could just about squeeze in another half-day at Hafjell. Non-winter sports fans will enjoy the outstanding Maihaugen indoor/outdoor folk history and architecture museum, a short walk from the town centre. Head back into the centre for a late lunch (picking up bags en route if at the Radisson) and, with time, a stroll along Storgata. Catch an afternoon train back to Oslo airport connecting with your early evening flight home.
This weekend’s arrangements are built around the bobsleigh run(s). Obviously, you’ll need to rearrange things a bit if your bobsleigh booking is for a different time from that given here. Nevertheless, when booking, it’s definitely worth trying for the Saturday afternoon slot suggested. Not only are conditions usually most pleasant around mid- afternoon, but if poor weather forces a postponement (fairly unusual), you’ll still have a shot at a second chance on the Sunday.
