TREATMENT:

    lifestyle changes: cheaper with few side effects!

    • Weight reduction

    • Exercise Æ lower resting HR, decreased sym tone

    • Diet

    • Sodium Æ controversial, but may improve the efficacy of drugs

    • PotassiumÆ deficiency can raise BP

    • Alcohol Æ decreases in chronic alcohol can lower BP

    • Low calcium intake Æ increase BP

    • Caffeine Æ increase BP

    • Smoking Æ questionable influence on BP. Don’t smoke

    • Relaxation therapy Æ increased BP is linked to stress. Effectiveness deprend on patient

    pharmacologic treatment

    • Four classes: diuretics, sympathomimetics, vasodilators, Renin-ang system antagonists

    • This is a review from pharm. I’m not going to write about all these drugs….

    • The recommendations are: diuretics and beta blockers. Addition or substitution of one of the other families of drugs can help in certain patients.

    • Drug regimen should fit patientÆ recall the changes in HTN with age…older patient may not need the beta blocker he needed when he was younger.

    • When using multiple agents, pick ones that act on different sites
