Session 22: A Community Changed

HIV, a relatively young disease, has already transformed the ways in which people all over the world negotiate and talk about sex. For gay and bisexual men, HIV has been the cornerstone of activism, visibility, and struggle. It has changed our language ( Are you po I clean D/D free? ) and has become a defining part of our history and identity as individuals in the larger society. On one hand, HIV has strengthened our community, empowering us to push the envelope, fight against stigma, and work for improved healthcare and resources. On the other hand, HIV has drawn a very clear line between HIVpositive and HIVnegative individuals,

dividing our community on the basis of HIV serostatus.

In this session, you will be able to talk with one another in a confidential space about your perceptions of how your HIV serostatus influences your identity, relationships with other gay/bisexual men, particularly those with the opposite HIV serostatus, and crystal. Discuss the following questions as a group.

How has your HIV serostatus impacted your identity as a gay or bisexual man?

How has your HIV serostatus impacted your sense of connection to a larger LGBT community?
