Bobby Thompson Giants Hero in 1951 Dead

Bobby Thompson whose “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” in 1951 is still re- membered after all these years as perhaps the most famous homerun in post- season history passed away recently at age 86. When he connected off the Dodgers Ralph Branca for a three-run homer in the bottom of the 9th in Game 3 of a National League playoff, he lifted the NY Giants over the Brooklyn Dodgers into the 1951 World Series. At one point the Giants were 131/2 games behind their rivals the Dodgers. The Giants had other plans and won 37 of their last 44 games and forced a playoff to win the NL pennant.

Thompson retired in 1960. He was a three-time All- Star. He hit .270 lifetime with 1,264 home runs and 1,026 RBIs and played from 1946-60. He played along side Willie Mays and called himself the “accidental hero.”

I would put his homerun up there along side Bill Mazeroski’s homerun that won the World Series for the Pirates over the Yankees in 1959 and the Carlton Fisk homerun in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series against the Mets that took the Red Sox to Game 7 where there were no great homeruns for the Sox.

Remembering Number 15

It’s unbelievable to think that we celebrated the 31st anniversary of the death of Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, who died in a plane crash on August 2, 1979. One of Munson’s biggest fans today is another New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada.

Lester Pitching for Sullivan Tire Jon Lester has just joined the Sullivan Tire team and will serve as a pitchman for Sullivan Tire next season. Previously, Sullivan Tire had Dustin Pedroia and Jimmy Rice pinch hitting for the tire chain. Lester will be seen in both TV spots and appearances.

Deacon White Named Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend Nineteenth century pio- neer player, James “Deacon” White has been selected the Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend for 2010 by the Nineteenth Century Committee of the Society for American Baseball Re- search. White, nicknamed “Deacon” for his virtuous life and his leadership on the field, was one of baseball’s first superstars. He began his playing career with the Forest City Baseball Club of Cleveland in 1868 and was still with the team when the first National Associa- tion game was played in 1871. Effort Under Way to Mark

Topeka Grave of Negro Leagues Standout A space of grass is all that designates where Carroll Ray “Dink” Mothell is buried. No tombstone. No name- plate. No marker of any kind. No description of a man who was born and raised in Topeka before going on to play 15 seasons of Negro Leagues baseball.

Two of the Best in A.L. The NY Yankees CC Sabathia is now 16-5 with a 3.12 ERA and the Red Sox Clay Buchholz is an amaz- ing 14-5 with a fantastic 2.36 ERA. Right now, this duo appears in line as strong contenders for the

A.L. Cy Young Award. Last season, Sabathia was a 19 game winner and was I believe robbed by not receiv- ing a Cy Young for his 2009 pitching stats. This year of course, I’m rooting for Buchholz though because he’s doing great and he wears a Red Sox uniform to boot.

Tied for Top This just in from Ed Shallow. Back in 1949, two players tied for the RBI title. Both were members of the Boston Red Sox. Both Ted Williams and Vern Stephens hit 159 RBIs that long ago season. Thanks, Ed.

Washington Nationals Honor the Montreal Expos’ Hall Of Fame Outfielder Andre Dawson

“He’s a great guy, who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame with all the num- bers he put up, and it’s great he did it with the Montreal Expos,” former Expos’ and current Nats’ pitcher Livan Hernandez, who spent one season play- ing alongside Andre Dawson with the Florida Marlins in 1996, said of the Hall of Fame outfielder who was honored recently in Nationals Park.

Huffman and State High School Sports

Board Agree to Baseball Bat Rule A proposed one-year state- wide moratorium on metal bats in high school baseball games has been shelved after the state governing body for high schools sports agreed to accelerate stan- dards on metal bats for the coming school year and move toward requiring protective head gear.

Texas Fan Writes This message is for Sal Giarratani. We were in Boston earlier this summer and met you while at Contrada’s. Recently, I pulled up the back issues of your paper and saw my son’s picture in your column. He was thrilled! Thanks for printing it. We thoroughly enjoyed Boston and brought back many great mem- ories one of which was our time at Contrada’s and meeting so many nice people. Thanks again.
