The netball season wrapped up with a tour to Sydney in October to participate in the Australian Defence Force Tournament which was a great success.
The first game of the tournament was the ANZAC demonstration match between the ADF and RNZAF Mixed Teams. This was the first ever outing for the RNZAF Mixed Team and they put up a fierce battle, making the ADF work hard for every goal scored, the final score being 36 – 30 to ADF.
Both the Women’s and the Mixed teams then played six games at the end of which they were both seeded 4th. Under normal tournament rules this would have seen them through to the semi-finals, however, only Aussies could compete in the semi-finals leaving the New Zealanders to watch from the sideline.
In true kiwi tradition, a small token of kiwiana was given to each team played against and later, at the final function, the team cemented their popularity with the Aussies by singing a waiata.
Both teams were a credit to the RNZAF in the way they conducted themselves both on and off the court and came away with the respect of the other competitors. The ADF State Teams provided a warm welcome and some good contacts were made for future competition, hopefully in New Zealand.
A special thanks goes to SQNLDRs Nancy Kirby and Marie Peters. Without their efforts the tour would not have happened. Also, thanks to the coaches, Mrs Iritana Smith and SGT Wai Paenga who stepped up at the last minute after F/S Kath Nikau was injured at Interbase and had to withdraw. Finally, tours are always difficult without sponsorship and we were lucky to have Mike Peters and Mortgage Access Limited provide us with financial support.
2006 The standard of netball in the RNZAF has been high in 2005 and players can build on this by continuing to play in Base teams as well as getting involved with local netball clubs. Everyone in RNZAF netball has contributed much this year from the coaches, managers, strappers and umpires to all of the players. Awesome effort people, hope you all had a great time.
We are also grateful for the assistance of all our sponsors throughout the country and hope you too have found it enjoyable and worthwhile contributing to RNZAF netball.
Coming up in 2006 is Interbase at Ohakea, Interservices at Woodbourne and the highlight of the year will be the celebration of 50 years of RNZAF Netball to be held during Interbase at Ohakea 28-30 July. We hope to have as many past netball players as possible join us for the weekend. If you are interested in getting some details about the reunion email delwyn. email@example.com
See you there!
