The fiscal year (FY) 2011-12 Corrections budget has been approved by the Michigan Legislature and awaits a signature by Governor Rick Snyder, mak- ing it law. The bill includes an appropriation of $1.96 billion which is nearly $71 million less than the FY 2010-11 budget. Significant items in the budget in- clude:

Muskegon and Florence Crane Close .................5

Privatization of food service and prison stores, saving $13.25 million;

Outlook Migration .........5

Early retirement savings of $8.8 million;

People Make the Difference .....................6

Consolidation of Lieutenant positions, saving $8.5 million;

Retirements..................7

Span-of-Control reductions to Central Office in an effort to reduce supervi- sory staff, saving $6 million;

  • Closure of Florence Crane and Muskegon correctional facilities with a full-

year savings of $56.8 million;

NEW ADMINISTRATION TAKES THE HELM

On June 1, 2011, Daniel H. Heyns became the ninth Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections. Director Heyns follows Director Richard M. McKeon who served as Director since January 2, 2011.

Director Heyns brings with him a new Executive Policy Team. Mr. McKeon will continue for an indefinite pe- riod as a Special Advisor to Director Heyns. Correc- tional Facilities Administration Deputy Director Dennis Straub will also continue to serve at the discretion of Director Heyns. Additionally, Russell Marlan and Barry Wickman will continue in their respective positions.
