Two Tchaikovsky masterpieces flank one of the most romantic of Shostakovich’s works, his Piano Concerto No.2 with its ethereal second movement. Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini with its great theatrical moments starts the concert, while the evening ends with a performance of what many people regard as Tchaikovsky’s most profound work, his Symphony No.6, known as the Pathétique.
