Proposed Title

RIEM:R&D CENTER IN FIELD OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Abstract

The Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology (RIEM) was founded in 1924 on the base of the Minsk Pasteur Station. At the present RIEM is advanced National R&D Center, where a wide range of fundamental studies in the area of epidemiology, medical virology, microbiology, immunology and parasitology are conducted. MAIN R&D TRENDS OF SCIENTIFIC DEPARTMENTS Microbiology and Immunology Studies on mechanisms of distribution, variability of pathogenic microorganisms in the environmental objects and human population, mechanisms of the resistance formation to antibiotics and disinfectants under conditions of hospital environment; systemic approach to the investigations of immunopathologic and biochemical mechanisms of pathogenesis of actual infectious and somatic human diseases; development of innovative methods and technologies for manufacture of test-systems, reagents, culture media for microorganisms, indication of bacterial contamination and differential diagnosis of bacterial infections; design of novel antimicrobial drugs, immunocorrecting preparations, restoration of cellular metabolism processes. Ecology and Epidemiology of Natural-Foci Infections Elaboration and implementation into medical care practice of modern methods of control and supervision of natural-foci and non-controlled anthroponosis viral infections; study of mechanisms and regularities of the realization of water- and food-borne roots for transmission of natural-foci and enteroviral human infections; screening and pilot developments; methodical and scientific approaches to the design and trials of new virus inhibitors; antiepidemic and therapeutic measures for the prevention of outbreak and epidemic rates in Belarus. Epidemiology and Immunoprophylaxis of Infectious Diseases Improvement of infectious diseases surveillance; development of new methods and means for their diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis. Biotechnology and Highly Pathogenic Infections. Development of immuno- and molecular-biologic diagnostic preparations against the agents of highly pathogenic and other infections; studies on molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity of highly pathogenic infections; molecular-epidemiologic analysis of urgent infections. Clinical Virology Laboratory diagnosis, studies on pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and course of viral infections; development of modern methods and means for etiologic and differential diagnosis, therapy and prevention of persistent viral and bacterial infections (HIV, AIDS, various types of herpes and cytomegaloviruses, adenoviruses, Epstein-Barr and varicella-zoster viruses , hepatitis B and C, Chlamydia, etc.); monitoring of HIV-infection prevalence on the territory of Belarus with molecular-epidemiologic and molecular-virologic methods. Scientific Medical Information Covers all aspects of research - news and events; MEDLINE and other databasesl; participation and partner-finding; R&D features and results; application for patents. The Department comprises a Patent service, a Medical Information Retrieval Group, a Library of Medical-Scientific Literature, and Information Technologies Group. WHO Collaborating Centers: · National reference lab on poliomyelitis · National reference lab on diphtheria · National Center on influenza · National center on antimicrobial resistance Collaboration forms: · Experience exchange · Expert opinions · Organization of scientific and practical conferences and seminars · Join scientific projects · Joint production
