Proposed Title

International Master’s studies in wine biotechnology

P. Romano, M. Sipiczki, P. Raspor

Abstract

The University of the Basilicata has a co-financed project for the realization of a MSc programme in “Wine Biotechnologies”. As it is planed, this education will start as a project of University of Basilicata involving University of Ljubljana and University of Debrecen. The complete project for time being is a pilot project, supported by Ministry of Education in Italian government.

The objectives of the master studies in wine biotechnology will be at the advanced level but not ignoring the basics and novel trends in vine technology, wine technology, wine microbiology, wine management, public perception of wine and its consequences and related issues. This will develop a professional capacity for the integration in the team of wine professionals in future wine business in Europe.

Since wine technology and wine business is facing new challenge with modern biotechnology we should develop our skills to cope with them. The master in wine biotechnology will be just a proper fundament for this challenge of the future.

From the group of potential candidates the special commission of professors from the master programme will selected a group of 15 candidates, who will enter the programme at the University of Basilicata in Italy and will continue their education in Hungary at University of Debrecen and University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. The lectures will be followed by practicals in different laboratories and in different wine cellars. Study will be finished with the thesis, which can be experimentally or theoretically oriented and will wrap comparable amount of workload.

The workload is comparable to other MSc programmes in Europe and if we compare it with ESCT systems of credit points you collect 60 credits in one year.

Among subjects of key interest for shaping your future expertise are: Vine and Wine technology, Micro-organisms and starter cultures, Genetics and molecular biology of yeasts, fungi and lactobacillus, vines, GMO and traceability,
