Biotechnology of -carotene production

Abstract

High active strains of both thallic forms (+, -) of Blakeslea trispora were obtained by means of sequential mutagenesis and protoplast regeneration. They have more thin cell envelope enabling extraction   b-carotene crystals, and more short fermentation cycle reducing the technological expenses. The strains produced in the industrial 20 m3 fermentor 4-5 % of b-carotene per weight of dry biomass and yielded 50 gram of dry biomass per one liter of the medium, are very stable during storage. The maximal output of the product can be achieved after 72 h of fermentation. The main components of sawing and fermentation media are presented by soy and corn meals, corn extract, green molasses and sunflower-oil.
