Some employers form a committee including workers, managers, union representatives, nonsmokers, and smokers to help develop the smokefree policy.100

Educate employees about the health effects of secondhand smoke and the rationale behind the new smokefree policy before it goes into effect.101

Your local health department, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or American Lung Association office can provide you with additional information and referrals to cessation programs for those employees who decide they want to quit smoking.102

Deal with noncompliance as you would any other personnel issue (e.g. tardiness, inappropriate dress, etc.).103
