THE CYPRUS TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

Basic Education Programs

The syllabuses are drawn up in cooperation with the committees set up by the Department of Educational Planning and Program Development for each subject area. The relative subject knowledge, skills, aims and objectives are described. The curricula are designed within the understanding of pupil-centered and constructive education. In delivering subjects, teachers use methods and techniques, measurement-assessment techniques in accordance with the understanding of pupil-centered education.

The Principles of Basic Education

  • 1.

    Pupils in basic education period are offered common and supportive orientation programs without any individual classification and discrimination

  • 2.

    The curricula and the books are prepared in a manner to make use of computer technology in accordance with the understanding of pupil-centered, cooperative learning and constructive education

  • 3.

    Skill, concept and life awareness is developed through the curricula

  • 4.

    Programs considering flexible and individual differences are implemented through individualized educational programs

  • 5.

    Textbooks are selected from the books approved by the Department of Educational Planning and Program Development by the school administration, teachers and parents' associations

The New Program Approach

  • 1.

    Skills and understanding are developed instead of memorizing and remembering knowledge

  • 2.

    Concept and life awareness are developed instead of details

  • 3.

    Alternative measurement and assessment techniques are designed instead of measurement and assessment tests (the pupil's output portfolio is designed)

  • 4.

    Constructiveness is used rather than simple expression

  • 5.

    Pupil-centered education is given in contrast to teacher and program-centered education

  • 6.

    It is given emphasis on individual differences not on an average type of pupil

  • 7.

    Programs are implemented flexibly not strictly

  • 8.

    It is given importance to cooperative learning instead of competitive and individual learning

  • 9.

    In drawing up programs, the requirements of the computer age is taken into consideration, it is given emphasis on developing pupils' computing skills and utilizing it creatively

  • 10.

    Programs and book contents include cultural, communal and environmental issues of the Turkish Cypriot people
