THE CYPRUS TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM PUPIL'S QUALITIES

    investigates and inquires,

    has a scientific and consistent thinking skill,

    bases information development on understanding and consistent thinking, not on rote learning,

    constantly develops his communication skill,

  • 5.

    gives emphasis on friendship and solidarity,

    continuously develops his mother tongue and effectively uses it in every period and every area of his life,

    is able to acquire a second language apart from English in accordance with the skills specified in "The European Language Portfolio",

    is able to develop an approach that Greek (Modern Greek) is the "language of the neighboring society".

    Is able to use and share information,

    knows how to use computer technology and uses it in /out of school,

    continuously struggles for the improvement of his personal abilities,

    adopts some common values of humankind such as peace, democracy, justice and equality and is aware of the contribution of Ataturk revolutions to these values,

    develops skills in contributing to planning and orientation of his life freely,

    regards Cyprus as his homeland,

    has an advanced sense of empathy, has a tolerant and conscious approach to cultural differences,

    respects human and human rights, loves and protects the nature and environment,

  • 20.

    knows how to defend his personal and social rights, is peaceful and hardworking.

GENERAL STRUCTURE OF THE CYPRUS TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

In an effort to raise individuals with the above mentioned qualities and in accordance with the integrity of 14-year duration before higher education, the Cyprus Turkish education system is reconstructed as stated below:

The new system is divided into three main periods as "Basic Education", "Secondary Education" and "Higher Education".

  • 1.

    Basic Education:

    • a)

      Pre-School Period: is composed of pre-school class (age of 5-6) and play-class (age of 4-5). Basic education covers the period between the play-class and the last grade of the Secondary School Period. Compulsory education begins from the pre-school class.

    • b)

      Primary School Period: is composed of the 1st-5th grades; It is the period between the ages of (6-7) and (10-11)

    • c)

      Secondary School Period: is composed of the 6th-9th grades, begins from the age of (11-12) up to (14-15)

  • 2.

    Secondary Education: is composed of the 10th-12th or 10th-13th grades. It lasts for 3 or 4 years depending on the programs.

  • 3.

    Higher Education: It is the period after secondary education.
