2007 Thanksgiving Mini-Convention Report
The Arizona ADS Chapter members are proud of their accomplishment at the Mini-convention 2007 held during Thanksgiving weekend. The Chapter was founded in 2006 in a small Druze community of about 20 households. The Chapter was very active during its infancy. The members, all enthusiastic and energetic, working together as one team, rose to the occasion and organized over a dozen events including Parties, picnics, and fund-raising events during the one and a half years preceding the convention. They organized and delivered a very successful Mini-convention with over 300 participants in less than two years of its initiation. Here are some of the new ideas tried at the Arizona ADS Mini-Convention:
First night a Movie night where two movies were played, one for adults and one for children at the same time. The movies were followed by a Reception, which was hosted by the Ladies of Arizona. It included a variety of home made foods, followed by socializing and board games. Mornings started with hiking, which was quite popular and enjoyed by those who participated. The Convention was officially declared open by a Kick-Off event. This opening event set the tone for the convention and delivered a message to the ADS youth on leadership and encouraged them to be involved. A big emphasis was made on helping the youth and singles meet each other. Facilitation session of “Getting Acquainted workshop” was offered. It was suc- cessful and very well attended. Another session targeted at our youth was a Cultural discussion on “Growing up in America”. It was well attended and valued. On Thursday night, which also was the Thanksgiving night, a prayer opportunity was offered in the format of a Laylet Jom3a. It was facilitated by Dr. Rabeea Aboufakher. A new concept was tested at this mini-convention. An education session was offered on Investing and financial planning. Top three speakers were recruited to speak at the convention. The Chapter provided the convention participants with a unique opportunity to watch in person a Zajal Party hosted by the legendary Zaghloul El-Damour and by our Brother Adel Khaddaj.
Besides the new activities and events tested and the new concepts tried for the first time, most normal events for the mini- convention were successful. They avoided any incidents, minimized wait times and lines, and offered excellent food with variety of programs that targeted not only adults and youth, but also some designed for children 5 – 12 and youth 13 – 17. The Youth/ Singles party was open for age 16 and up. Religious discussions and seminars were very popular. Several sessions ran into the upcoming events and people wanted to keep the discussions going.
