INTRODUCTION

Managing the Sacred: A Guide for Synagogue Board Members is a project of the Ida and Howard Wilkoff Department of Synagogue Management of the Union for Reform Judaism (the “Union”). The Department of Synagogue Management provides assistance to Union member congregations in all areas of synagogue management and administration. The department and the Joint Commission on Synagogue Management, in cooperation with the National Association of Temple Administrators, develop materials for and provide consultations to congregations throughout North America. The department strives to help congregations build, develop, and maintain well- run, spiritually fulfilling congregations, in which the sacred informs the practical and the practical creates the sacred.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Special thanks to the many synagogue leaders who have used the department’s materials and provided suggestions and useful feedback that have been incorporated into this guide. Some materials in the guide have been adapted from Trusteeship in a Great Tradition and Improving Synagogue Board Performance, both by Daniel S. Schechter, and from leadership materials prepared by Dale Glasser. We are grateful to the following members of the Synagogue Management Commission who read drafts of Managing the Sacred: A Guide for Synagogue Board Members and offered their invaluable feedback: Davna B. Brook, Jan Epstein, Charles Nechemias, Steven R. Pruzan, and Tussy Shnider. Special thanks to copy editor Kathy Parnass and designer Helayne Friedland.
