Connect these ideas with Australian society today.

Introduce the novel

Tell students that the novel they are going to read deals with a similar situation. The people in the story come from Nicaragua to live in Australia and an amazing series of events unfolds.

Research

Find Nicaragua on the globe or map of the world

Students use the internet to find information on Nicaragua and record interesting facts about the location, geography, climate, population, main industries, schooling and lifestyles of the people living in Nicaragua.

later in the unit.

This activity should be used as a diagnostic assessment task to determine the depth of further teaching of narrative structure and language features.

Assess if students are able to make connections between the story they have created and the real world.
