Xcel Tae Kwon Do Center Captures 39 Medals at University of Bridgeport
The 2009 Connecticut Martial Arts Festival was held on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at the University of Bridgeport. The event is designed to bring martial arts practitioners to- gether from around the country to celebrate the beauty and the grace of the martial arts.
The competition categories were choreographed pair and team patterns, board breaking,
and self defense. In the forms or pattern competition, all of the competitors are divided into groups of two or three par- ticipants. Exhibiting harmony, synchronicity, power and grace of the choreographed move- ments, they were judged and graded accordingly by a panel of experienced black belts.
In board breaking com- petition, the participants were
given 10 wooden board pieces to shatter using a variety of 10 different acrobatic kicks and hand techniques. The high degree of difficulty in the techniques chosen by the par- ticipants would generate higher total points.
Xcel Tae Kwon Do Center in Hasbrouck Heights sent a team of 20 athletes to this event and the results were outstand- ing. The team was comprised of Sara Herron, Sarah Carter, Alexis Putkisto, Dante Milne, Anastasia Robitalle, Eric Rob- italle, Stephanie Tom, Akshay Swaminathan, Hannah Smith, Cassie Tom, Vincent Bacu- lio, Goutham Swaminathan, Dario Morales, Ashley Bol- well, Kaitlyn Bolwell, Madison Christiana, Andrew Alvarez, Steven Waring, Filip Checko and Casey King.

The Xcel Tae Kwon Do students competed in 38 events. Impressively, all 19 students placed in the top 3 of their division, most of the students receiving the gold medal. At the end of the day, Team Xcel brought home 39 gold, silver and bronze medals combined. They were considered once again to be the best team of the tournament.
Team Xcel spent the last few months preparing for this championship, choosing to dedicate themselves to a goal where practice makes perfect and team work is everything.
Master Steven Lee empha- sized team work. He consis- tently reminded his students, if you work hard as a team, think as a team, you will become champions as a team.
That’s exactly what hap- pened at the 2009 Connecticut Martial Arts Festival as every- one came home a champion. Congratulations to the students of Xcel Tae Kwon Do Center in Hasbrouck Heights for a job well done! Story by Christine Adamo. Photo provided by Xcel TKD Center. ###
