Center Street Fire Claims Home

On October 17, 2009, at 23:39, the Wood-Ridge Fire Department was dispatched to a working fire consuming the rear of the first floor, with heavy smoke throughout the structure. It was confirmed that the building was unoc- cupied.

T he East Ruther ford F.A.S.T. Team and Moonachie EMS were immediately called, along with the 2nd alarm of Hasbrouck Heights, Little Fer- ry, Moonachie and Carlstadt.

The 3rd alarm of Lodi, Rutherford and Wallington stood by at WRFD Headquar- ters.

W-R Engine 905 arrives and a team begins to attack the fire through the first floor.

W-R Ladder puts up ground ladders and prepares for a roof vent and started a second line to the second floor interior.

Wood-Ridge Fire Department Distributes “Vial of Life” Cards

The Wood-Ridge Fire De- partment is distributing a “Vial of Life” card to everyone in Wood-Ridge, along with their Calendar Drive.

The “Vial of Life” card allows people to record key medical information for first responders. It also includes a few common sense guidelines for people who may need their services.

The cards are about 8.5” by 4.5”, on heavy stock, and are ideal for attaching to a refrig- erator with a magnet.

From the desk of Fire Chief Anthony Gentile:

The Wood-Ridge Fire Department and Emergency Squad is pleased to provide this card to our residents, and we encourage you to use it.

Simply complete this form and attach it to your refrig- erator. In the event of an emer- gency, having this information readily available will enable our Police Officers, Firefight- ers and Emergency Medical personnel to assist you more effectively and efficiently.

If you would like addi- tional cards, please visit our Headquarters at 85 Humboldt

Street any Sunday morning between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., or call us at 201-939-2387.

We would also like to offer several suggestions for those residents who may require the services of our Emergency Squad:

1) Please have your house number clearly marked and visible from the street.

2) If you call for us at night, please turn on a light at your front door.

3) If you have any pets, please place them in a closed room while we are present.

4) If you have a bed-rid- den family member, consider having him or her reside on the first floor of your house, if at all possible.

5) If you require non-emer- gency transportation to or from a local hospital, please note that we can provide such a service only after 7:00 p.m. on week- days; weekend hours are more flexible.

The Wood-Ridge Fire De- partment & Emergency Squad is proud to serve our commu- nity. We are always looking for new members... please consider joining us! ###

The initial fire is extin- guished, but the fire traveled to the roof area -- at that point the tactic becomes an exterior attack.

The fire was under control within the hour and firefight- ers took care of hot spots and overhaul.

It appeared to be a two fam- ily, side-by-side home, with one side vacant. It appeared that the fire started on the vacant side which was under construction. The building sustained signifi- cant damage and was declared uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but not considered suspicious.

No injuries were reported. Photos by Dennis Kronyak Sr. ###
