This information and the attached form are for UIUC students and UIUC degree applicants who wish to be considered for ESL TAships in the ESL Service Courses in DEIL or at the IEI.
If you are applying to the MATESL Program as a new graduate student, you will be automatically considered for an ESL TAship, and so you do not need to complete the attached form.
If you are applying to any other UIUC program, please fill out the attached form and also inform your admitting department that you are doing so. 1
All currently enrolled and continuing UIUC students must fill out the attached form, regardless of past ESL teaching in DEIL or the IEI, and regardless of any written and/or oral promises of continued employment. This allows us to learn of any changes in your teaching preferences.
Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:
enrollment in the MATESL program or in another UIUC graduate program with a focus on second language acquisition/studies/teaching
prior classroom language teaching experience teaching ESL in a university setting (to adults)
strong academic record and demonstrable future career motivation to second language studies and/or teaching
native English proficiency or nativelike proficiency as determined by the test score results below:
TOEFL total/composite score of 627 or above (paper and pencil test), 273 or above (computer-based test) or 100 or above (iBT), and
Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5.5 (55) or over, and
SPEAK/TSE test score of 55
