Woodland management for birds: Birds and woodlands in Wales

Provided site-specific information of the stage of the nesting attempt is known, disturbance-free distances may be reduced to 200 m as breeding progresses. This principle may apply to other species.

Table 20 Safe working distances from priority woodland birds (including Schedule 1 species not included elsewhere in this guide).

Species in bold are featured in this guide. Additional species on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act or Annex 1 of the EU Birds Directive have been included.

Schedule 1

Appendix 4). Although there may be a reluctance to report such an occurrence, unintentional destruction is not an offence. Advice and assistance may suggest relocating well-grown young birds to an artificial nest, or fostering eggs or young onto another pair. Where specially protected Schedule I species are involved, the above requires special licensing from the Countryside Council for Wales, although taking injured birds into care for a short period while seeking advice is lawful.
