Appendix 5 Bird survey methods and information
For all bird species monitoring methods see Gilbert et al. For general woodland surveys a four-visit Common Bird Census method will be sufficient to obtain a population estimate for most species and has the advantage of indicating the distribution of species within the
woodland. An alternative approach is to use Point Counts that provide a measure of abundance of species. If there is a requirement to have detailed and repeatable results for a particular species then a method designed for that species should be used.
