University of Kentucky

The Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles (MAT) department at the University of Kentucky in the School of Human Environmental Sciences is undergoing dramatic change this year.  We are in the process of merging with the major in Hospitality Management and Tourism which has been previously housed in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics.  This year is a planning year for the merger, and we are coming up with the best plan for becoming a combined department.  Once the consolidation is in place, then we will begin a national search for a new chair of the new department.  We are also coming up with a new name for this combined department that reflects both of our majors.  In MAT this past year, we have seen a sizable increase in our graduate student enrollment.  An outcome of our merger is that we will begin to move forward with the development of a Ph.D. program.

The University of Kentucky hosted a two week Sustainability Showcase in September 2009.  The MAT department participated by hosting a denim collection drive in partnership with Cotton Inc.  The University of Kentucky has also established a Sustainability Task Force this year as well.  This Task Force is working to highlight the sustainable activities going on at the University of Kentucky.

In 2008, the MAT department developed the Official Kentucky Plaid.  Students submitted plaid designs and online voting determined the winner.  We are now producing products developed by the students using the plaid.  MAT is partnering with a local Lexington, KY company to offer various products made from the Official Plaid.
