Special Update on Codes & Standards

PIAC Chairman Dan Robertson (Rheem) reports: CIPH have written to the Provincial-Territorial Policy Advisory Committee on Codes requesting:

  • 1.

    National regulations to prohibit the sale of non-approved plumbing and hydronic heating (hot water) products;

  • 2.

    National legislation to prevent the sale of counterfeit product;

  • 3.

    That provinces and territories mandate a uniform Canada-wide use of conservation-type plumbing products.

“The Institute has taken action to date on these challenges facing our industry and has been made aware that we should also be communicating these important activities to the PTPACC. Our goal is to receive the support of the PTPACC organization in moving these initiatives forward for implementation. They were fully supported recently at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Advisory Council on Plumbing”, reported Dan.

The issue of inspections and enforcement was addressed at the most recent CACP meeting in Whitehorse. CIPH have offered to Chair a task force that will examine these issues and offer potential solutions. To begin the process, Provincial/Territorial Regulators are encouraged to complete the following three questions. CIPH will compile the responses and use them as the basis for the task force to begin its work.

  • 1.

    Over the next 1-3 years, what challenges/issues are going to impact:

    • Your Region?

    • Our industry?

    • What do you see as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the our current regulatory system?

  • 2.

    How can CACP and Industry assist you in dealing with these

challenges?; and 3. How can we use technology to address these challenges?

Stay tuned for further details in the near future. For more information contact r.suppa@ciph.com
