Youth Awareness Program: Attracting Students to the Canadian PHC Industry

Chairman Adrien Pilon (Emco) reports: Scholarship Program

The CIPH Scholarship Program has been launched with $2,500 scholarships being awarded to the following for 2006:

  • College of the North Atlantic (Newfoundland)

  • Nova Scotia Community College

  • New Brunswick Community College

  • College Ahuntsic (Quebec)

  • Conestoga College (Ontario)

  • Mohawk College (Ontario)

  • Red River College (Manitoba)

  • Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology

  • Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

  • Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

  • British Columbia Institute of Technology

Students in the following programs of study will be considered for scholarships:

  • Engineering (All subject specialties);

  • Business Administration;

  • Engineering Technology; or

  • Phase 2 or 3 of an apprenticeship program.

The purpose of establishing this Scholarship Program is to encourage students to seek careers in the manufacturing, distribution and sale of plumbing, hydronic (hot water) heating and industrial pipe, valves and fittings industries. The CIPH Scholarship Program will be on-going from year to year, although eligible schools may be subject to change.

Industry Awareness DVD

CIPH is developing a 5 minute promotional DVD that will be used to attract youth to the industry. This DVD will be made available for use by CIPH Regions at Career Fairs, tradeshows, business meetings, and at technical institutes, etc. This DVD is expected to be completed and

IPVF Council Update

Chairman Kevin Fullan (Mueller Flow Control) reports:

The 1st PVF Networking Luncheon was held Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre in Oakville. With over 75 industry professionals in attendance, this inaugural event celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the Council’s founding, and featured Jim Olsztynski as keynote speaker. Stay tuned for information on upcoming networking events in spring, 2007.

Careers Fairs: the IPVF Council will represent CIPH at upcoming careers fairs in the Halton Region, Dec. 1st, 2006 at T.A. Blakelock High School, and Feb. 15th, 2007 at White Oaks Secondary School,

PVF Roundtable: Council Chairman Kevin Fullan attended the recent PVF Roundtable meeting at ISH North America in Chicago on September 28th, which featured an industry panel discussion. The Council will send representatives to future Roundtable meetings on behalf of CIPH. For more information, contact s.apps@ciph.com.

Fall Workshops

CIPH, in conjunction with the Partners in Distribution Excellence (PIDE) hosted the following workshops in fall 2006:

  • “Smart HR: Human Resources 101” workshop featuring Bill Witz, October 19th in Toronto, 14 students attended.

  • “The Changing World of Selling: Outside Sales Skills” workshop featuring Frank Foster, October 19th in Halifax, with 30 students attending and November 9th in Vancouver, with 32 students attending.

  • “The New Drivers of Profitability” leadership forum, held November 7th in Toronto with 24 students in attendance.

  • “Leadership Excellence for the Wholesale Branch Manager” workshop featuring Jim Ambrose, held November 26-29 in Toronto with 15 students in attendance.

NEW! CIPH and MCAC Supply Chain Horizontal Workshops

CIPH and MCAC will be holding a new series of Horizontal Supply Chain Workshops across Canada in 2007, with a pilot beginning in Toronto. These workshops will teach participants how everyone in the procurement chain can be on the "same page" in terms of material purchasing and delivery. This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Perry Daneshgari, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Product Development, University of Michigan-Flint, and President of the consulting firm MCA Inc.

Look for more meaningful and valuable workshops from CIPH in the spring of 2007!

Inside Sales Skills Correspondence Course
