RECOVERY OF EXPENDITURES

In cases where repayment will not cause undue hardship the Legal Aid Society expects clients to repay the costs of their legal representation. The Recoveries Department oversees the payment contributions from the clients. These contributions are generally in the form of monthly payments set up on a schedule, in amounts that reflect the financial situation of the client. Other contributions can result from Bail or Judgment Proceeds Assignments, and settlements consequential to a Security Agreement. Interest is not charged on outstanding balances, and clients are not billed the GST portion of their lawyer’s accounts.

In cases where a client’s income falls within a contribution range of income, a monthly payment requirement may be enforced while coverage is ongoing. See page 16 for the contribution ranges.
