FRESHMAN LEVEL-- 2011 2012

Dear Student:

Congratulations, you have been accepted into the World History Honors Course at Bishop O’Connell for the School Year 2011-1012. Your grades from your elementary school and your test scores and essay writing ability have indicated that you can perform at a higher level than the average student. Students in this course are expected to perform at this high level and to demonstrate their ability to do independent work. Set forth below is your first independent work assignment for this class. We welcome you into the Social Studies Department at Bishop O’Connell High School.

All World History Honors students are expected to complete the following assignment. The assignment is due at the end of the first week of school and is worth 20% of your first quarter grade. It is important so please do your best.

Assignment: Select one book from the list appearing on the back of this letter and read it. You should be able to find them in any major public library, Amazon.com, or large bookstore. Please type a 500 word analysis of each book. (about 2 pages) Your analysis should contain the following components: a. A brief summary of the content/and specific historical events described; b. describe how successful the book is in explaining its historical message and state whether you agree with it or not; c. Include at least three short quotations woven into your analysis; d. check your spelling and use good grammar including proper paragraphing of your work. Your analysis must be typed. Do not include a cover or title page. Thank you.
