Drawing on ex post facto research designs common in educational research, the
investigation will measure the correlation between Masonic membership and accessible
variables. While this effort to establish a functional relationship may overlook one or
more of the factors which influenced the soldier’s service record, the lore of soldiers and
Masons suggest that some correlation may be present. Spurious results could arise from
the factors having a common cause, reverse causality or the possibility of other
independent variables. A careful design of statistical study should partially control
against spurious results.
